Many people use their computers more for fun than they do for work and one way to have fun on your computer is to play video games.

Today’s video games are very advanced and provide very realistic graphics and gameplay. But if you are the type who prefers the classics, then you are in luck. In this article, we will be showing you how to install the classic Windows 7 games such as Solitaire and Minesweeper on Windows 10 & Windows 11 computers.

If you didn’t know, Windows 11 does come with some built in games. If you search for games in the taskbar search box, you should be able to open the Solitaire & Casual Games app and then launch one of the games from within the app.

1. Why Ditch the Modern Windows 11 Games?

While Microsoft does include the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” in modern versions of Windows, many users find it incredibly frustrating to use. The modern UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps are heavily bloated and require an active internet connection for background tracking. They are also loaded with intrusive video ads that push you toward a paid monthly subscription just to play a simple game of Solitaire.

2. The Benefits of Classic Win32 Programs

The classic Windows 7 games are traditional executable programs built on the older Win32 architecture. They launch instantly the second you click on them. They require absolutely zero internet connection to function properly and track no background telemetry data. Best of all they are 100% ad-free forever.

3. Download the Classic Games Package

If you prefer the original Windows 7 games like classic Solitaire and Minesweeper, there is a simple way to install them on your newer Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer. The first thing you will need to do is open your web browser and go directly to the Windows 7 Games website here. You will then see several other classic apps you can install on your newer Windows PC such as the original Paint, Calculator, Notepad, Task Manger and MSconfig apps.

4. Included Games and Defunct Servers

This custom installer packages all your old favorites including Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Minesweeper, FreeCell, Hearts, Chess Titans, Mahjong Titans, and Purble Place. It also includes the multiplayer titles Internet Spades, Internet Checkers, and Internet Backgammon. Microsoft officially shut down the matchmaking servers for those specific internet games back in early 2020. You can still safely install them, but the online matchmaking features will no longer connect to the defunct servers. The single-player games work flawlessly.

5. Extract the Downloaded Installer File

To actually install the classic Windows 7 games, you will need to scroll down the website page and click on the specific button that says Download Games. You will then need to completely unzip the downloaded file to a folder on your computer. You will have an extracted executable file called Windows7Games_for_Windows_11_10_8.exe that you will need to double click on to start the installation.

6. Bypass the SmartScreen Warning Popup

Because this installer is technically a modified package created by a third-party developer to port old Windows 7 system files into the newer Windows 11 architecture, your computer may automatically flag it as an unrecognized app. If you double-click the installer and see a massive blue Windows protected your PC popup, do not panic. This is a very standard SmartScreen false positive. Simply click the More info link located directly in the text of the warning.

7. Launch the Setup Wizard

Once you click that hidden text link, a brand new button will instantly appear at the bottom right corner of the blue warning box. Click the Run anyway button to bypass the security block and officially launch the setup wizard. The installation is very straightforward from this point forward.

8. Customize Your Game Installation

The only step that you might want to change something on is where you choose which games you actually want to install. The wizard will intentionally have every single game selected by default. You can easily uncheck any titles that you do not want to have installed on your hard drive. The specific box for the internet games is actually unchecked by default since the servers are dead, so it is up to you if you want to add those games as well.

9. Locate Your New Games Folder

After you make your selections and click on the Install button, the classic games will then be quickly installed on your computer. You can then go directly to your start menu and find the newly created Games folder. You will instantly see the nostalgic icons for all the exact games you installed sitting within this folder.

10. Launch and Play the Classics

Then you can simply click on the specific game you wish to play. The application will be loaded instantly without any annoying splash screens. You can now finally enjoy your new classic Windows 7 games right on your modern computer hardware.

11. Windows Updates and Your Classic Games

Many users wonder if a standard Windows Update will completely delete these classic games. Standard security patches will not affect your game files at all. However, when you install a major feature update like upgrading from version 24H2 to 25H2, Windows essentially reinstalls the operating system and cleans out unsupported legacy folders. You may just need to run this custom installer again after a massive Windows feature update finishes.

12. Pinning Your Favorite Games to the Taskbar

You might want faster access to these games without digging through the Start menu every single time. Once the games are fully installed, simply search for your favorite game directly in the Start Menu search bar. Right-click the classic icon when it appears in the results and select Pin to taskbar for incredibly easy access. Your game will now sit permanently on your desktop taskbar.

13. Fixing Blurry Games on 4K Monitors

Because these games were originally designed back in 2009, they simply do not have native high-DPI scaling code. If they look noticeably blurry or pixelated on your brand new high-resolution display, right-click the game’s shortcut icon and select Properties. Go straight to the Compatibility tab and click Change high DPI settings to let the modern application safely control the visual scaling.
