As you probably know, Google is the king of search engines and they also offer many free services and apps such as Gmail, Docs, Drive and Photos, to name a few. If you use the Google Chrome web browser and Google search engine, you have probably noticed the AI Overview section at the top that gives you information on your searches. For example, if we were to do a search for “What is the most popular computer brand?”, we would see the results shown below with the AI Overview at the top. Then the regular search results will be listed below.
This AI Overview section uses Google’s Gemini AI large language model (LLM) to give you additional information about your searches above the typical search result list that you are used to seeing. This is similar to ChatGPT if you have ever used that service. Some people find this handy while others are not fans of AI in general and can do without it. In this article, we will be showing you how to remove the Google Gemini AI Overview search results feature from Google Chrome.
To remove the Gemini AI Overview search results feature from Chrome, we will need to click on the three vertical dots at the upper right corner of Chrome and then choose Settings. Next, we will click on the Search engine setting and then on Manage search engines and site search.
Before making the next change, you may want to look at the Search engine section and see which setting is your current default in case you want to revert back to it.
Now we will go to the Site search section and click on the Add button to create a new entry.
Here is what needs to be entered for each field.
Name – This can be whatever you like
Shortcut – @WebOnly
URL with %s in place of query – https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14
Once you have entered the required information, click on the Add button to continue.
Now our new site search entry will be added to the list. Now we will click on the three vertical dots next to it and choose Make default.
The new No AI Overview site search item will then be moved up to the Search engine category above.
Now when we go back to Google and do a search for “What is the most popular computer brand?”, we will be shown only the search results and not the Gemini AI Overview summary.
If you want to reverse these settings so the Gemini AI Overview feature is available, you can go to the Search engines section, click the three dots by your original setting and choose Make default. Once you have changed the default setting, you will be able to delete your Gemini AI entry if you do not want to have it as an option any longer.
