As you are probably aware of, AI is taking over everything or at least trying to! So, you have the choice to accept it or fight it but either way, there is no escaping it. If you are a fan of AI and have tried all the language models (chatbots) such as Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude or ChatGPT, then you most likely have one that works the best for you.
Many of these AI tools are often integrated into other applications such as how Microsoft has added Copilot to its Windows OS as well as to their Office suite so you can use it with programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. There is even a Copilot search option from the Windows taskbar search.
Of course, you can access these AI tools from your web browser but if you want really to take advantage of them for your web searches, you can configure your browser to use them as a search option. In this article, we will be showing you how to add a ChatGPT search option to Chrome, Edge, or Firefox web browsers.
The process for adding ChatGPT as a search option to your web browser will vary depending on which browser you are using. And of course, if you are using more than one browser, you can add it to the others as well.
Adding ChatGPT Search to Google Chrome
To add ChatGPT as a search option for Chrome, you will first need to click on the 3 vertical dots at the upper right corner of the browser window and go to Settings. From there, click on Search Engine on the left of the screen. Next, click on Manage search engines and site search. Finally, scroll down to Site search and click on the Add button.
Add the following information to the three boxes:
Name: ChatGPT
Shortcut: @chatgpt
URL: https://chatgpt.com/?q=%s&hints=search
Then click on the Save button. Your configuration should look like the image below.
Now when you go back to Site search, you should have the new ChatGPT entry in the list.
To use ChatGPT for your searches in Chrome, simply type @chatgpt in the address bar and then anything you type after that will be searched for by ChatGPT itself rather than your default search engine.
Adding ChatGPT Search to Microsoft Edge
The process of adding ChatGPT search to Edge is similar to Chrome with a couple of differences.
To begin, open Edge and click on the 3 horizontal dots and go to Settings. Next, click on Privacy, Search & Services. Scroll down to Search and connected experiences. Click on Address bar and search and then on Manage search engines.
You can then add the information that was used for Chrome:
Name: ChatGPT
Shortcut: @chatgpt
URL: https://chatgpt.com/?q=%s&hints=search
Click the Save button.
You should then see your new ChatGPT search engine entry in the list.
Then you can type in @chatgpt in the address bar to search with ChatGPT.
Adding ChatGPT Search to Mozilla Firefox
The process of adding ChatGPT search to Firefox is a bit different compared to Chrome and Edge and requires some extra steps.
The first step requires you to type about:config in the address bar of Firefox and press Enter. You will then need to click on the Accept the Risk and Continue button.
In the search field, type (or copy\paste) browser.urlbar.update2.engineAliasRefresh.
Click the + button next to this variable to add it and change its value to True.
Next, you will need to click on the 3 horizontal lines and go to Settings and then click on Search. Now you can scroll down to Search Shortcuts and click the Add button.
Add the following information to the boxes:
Search engine name: ChatGPT
Engine URL: https://chatgpt.com/?q=%s&hints=search
Alias: @chatgpt
When you are done, click on Add Engine.
You should then see ChatGPT in your list of search shortcuts.
To do a ChatGPT search from Firefox, type @chatgpt in the address bar followed by your search query.
As you can see, adding a ChatGPT search option to Chrome, Edge or Firefox web browsers is a fairly simply process. And if you want to remove the option, simply go back to the place where you added and you can remove it from there.
