Directly Download the Windows 10 ISO Image without Using the Media Creation Tool

Last Updated on April 28, 2026

MPORTANT 2026 UPDATE: Microsoft officially ended standard support for Windows 10 in October 2025. Unless you are enrolled in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, your system will no longer receive critical security patches.

If you are reinstalling Windows 10 now, ensure you have a plan for security. We highly recommend using it in an offline environment or as a dedicated, isolated virtual machine.

If you are still running Windows 10 and aren’t quite ready to make the jump to Windows 11, you are definitely not alone.

Since you can hardly buy a new computer with Windows 10 pre-installed anymore, you will most likely be installing it on a custom-built PC or doing a fresh wipe on your existing hardware.

How to Download Windows 10 ISO Directly (No Media Creation Tool)

To install the operating system from scratch, you need the Windows 10 ISO disk image file.

Normally, Microsoft’s website detects that you are visiting from a Windows machine. It then hides the direct ISO download link from you.

Instead, they force you to download the Media Creation Tool.

While that utility is fine for creating basic USB installers, it is an incredibly annoying extra step if you just need the raw ISO file.

You might just want the ISO for a virtual machine, or maybe you prefer using third-party boot tools like Rufus.

In this guide, we will show you a quick developer trick to download the Windows 10 ISO directly from Microsoft’s servers, completely bypassing the Media Creation Tool.

Why Does Microsoft Hide the Direct ISO Links?

When you visit the Windows 10 download page from a standard PC, Microsoft’s servers check your browser’s “user agent.”

They do this to ensure everyday users are guided through a safe, automated installation process that checks their hardware for compatibility first.

However, the Media Creation Tool often throws weird error codes on certain networks. It also doesn’t work at all for Mac or Linux users.

By simply “spoofing” your web browser to look like a mobile device or a Mac, we can bypass this server check.

This forces the Microsoft website to reveal the hidden direct download buttons.

How to Trick the Download Page

To do this, you will need to open the official [Windows 10 download page] on the Microsoft website. I recommend using the Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome browser for this.

Once you are on the page, press the F12 key (or Ctrl+Shift+I) on your keyboard.

This will open the Developer Tools pane on the right side of your screen.

Open Edge Developer tools

Look for the three vertical dots near the top right corner of that new Developer Tools pane.

Click those dots, hover over More tools, and then select Network conditions from the menu.

Add network conditions

If you don’t see the Network Conditions tab immediately, don’t worry. Depending on your exact version of Edge or Chrome, the layout shifts around a bit.

You can also try pressing Ctrl + Shift + M to toggle the “Device Emulation” mode. This shrinks your screen size and lets you pick a mobile device from a dropdown menu at the top.

Changing Your User Agent

Once you have the Network conditions tab open at the bottom of the developer pane, look for the User agent section.

Uncheck the box that says Use browser default.

Click the dropdown menu that appears. You want to select a non-Windows device.

While the old “BlackBerry” option used to be the standard go-to choice for this trick, it is a bit outdated now.

Selecting Safari — Mac or Chrome — iPad is currently the most reliable way to trick the site into showing the direct links.

Once your fake device is selected, do not close the developer tools yet.

Simply click the refresh button in your browser, or press F5 on your keyboard.

Getting Your ISO File

After the page reloads, the site will look a little different. It will now present you with a simple dropdown menu.

Under “Select edition,” choose Windows 10 (multi-edition ISO) and click the Confirm button.

Next, it will ask you to choose your product language.

Pick your preferred language from the list and click Confirm one more time.

Finally, the site will generate your direct download links.

You can choose between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Unless you are installing this on a very old piece of hardware with less than 4GB of RAM, you will want to click the 64-bit Download button.

How to Create a Bootable USB with Your New ISO

Once the download finishes, you will have a single file roughly 5GB to 6GB in size.

Since Windows 10 is no longer the main OS for Microsoft, the file you just grabbed will usually be the 22H2 version, which was the final major build.

If you are using VirtualBox or VMware, you can simply point the virtual machine’s optical drive settings straight to this ISO file to boot it up.

However, if you are reinstalling Windows on a physical PC, you need to turn this file into a bootable USB drive.

We highly recommend using a free utility called Rufus for this instead of the official Media Creation Tool.

Just grab an empty USB flash drive (at least 8GB in size) and plug it into your computer.

Open Rufus, and make sure your flash drive is selected in the “Device” dropdown at the top.

Click the “SELECT” button and locate your newly downloaded Windows 10 ISO file.

Leave the partition scheme as GPT, and click the Start button at the bottom. Rufus will format the drive and unpack the ISO onto it much faster than Microsoft’s native tools.

Windows 10 ISO Download FAQ

Is this ISO official from Microsoft?

Yes! Using the browser-spoofing method still pulls the file directly from Microsoft’s official distribution servers.

It is the exact same, completely untouched file that the Media Creation Tool would download in the background. We just removed the annoying software wrapper.

How long do the download links last?

When you click confirm, Microsoft generates a unique link tied to your IP address. This specific link is only valid for 24 hours.

If your internet drops and your download gets interrupted, you cannot resume it the next day. You will need to repeat these quick F12 steps to generate a fresh link.

Does this ISO include both Pro and Home versions?

Yes it does. The “Multi-edition ISO” contains the installation files for both Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro.

When you install it, your Windows license key (or the digital entitlement stored on your motherboard) will automatically determine which version gets activated.
