You may not have known that you can add comments to folders in File Explorer so that way when you view these folders you can see these comments next to them. Many people suggest enabling hidden files and folders and then customizing the folder in order to view the desktop.ini file. Then you would need to edit the desktop.ini file to add your comment. In this article, we will be showing you how to add comments to folders in Windows File Explorer.
Since many people share the same computer, it makes sense that you may want to be able to add comments to folders to tell other users things such as what types of files to put in the folder or not to delete any files from the folder and so on.
There is an older (and free) tool called StyleFolder that will let you easily add comments to your folders without having to go through all the technical steps that many people try to use to accomplish this. Once you download and install StyleFolder, you can then run it and add a folder to the app by clicking on the Browse button to select it. We will add a folder called Confidential Files to the app.
You will see that there are options to change the color and icon, but these will most likely not work with newer versions of Windows.
To add a comment to the selected folder, simply type it in the yellow box next to the folder name. We will add a comment that says, “Do not delete anything here!” and then click the OK button.
In order to see the comment for your folder, you will first need to make sure to change the folder view to Details by clicking the View dropdown in File Explorer and selecting Details.
Then you will need to right click on any column name and then choose More.
Then find the Comments checkbox in the list and select it and click the OK button.
Now you will see your new comment next to the folder name. You can then drag and drop the column headers to change their order if you want to put the folder comment closer to its name. If you want to remove the comment from the folder, you can simply open the StyleFolder app, add the folder that has the comment, and then remove the comment from the app.
As you can see, using StyleFolder is an easy way to add comments to folders in File Explorer and is much simpler than trying to edit the desktop.ini file for the folder itself.
