As you probably know, Microsoft Word is the most popular word processing program in use today. There are several ways to use Word for your documents as well. You can use the standalone version that you install on your computer which is what most people like to use. You can also use Word online in a web browser as part of your Microsoft Office 365 subscription. There is even a free online version of Office that you can use that works great but just doesn’t have all the same features as the pay for version. And of course, you have other apps such as Google Docs and the free OnlyOffice suite that can open Microsoft Office documents.
But if you are looking for something you can use on multiple computers to work on Word documents, we have a nice solution for you. In this article, we will be showing you how to open, edit, create and save Microsoft Word documents for free with Docs+.
To install the Docs+ software, you will need to open the Microsoft Store app on your computer and do a search for Docs+. Then once you find it, click on install or get to have it installed on your computer.
Once you install Docs+ and open it, you may or may not see the Docs+ launcher which will show you your recently worked on documents after you have started to use it. You can also create a new document from here or open an existing Word document that you have saved on your computer.
Once you have the Docs+ app open, you will see that it looks very similar to Microsoft Word and has many of the same tabs.
Here are the main tools you will find in each of the tabs in the Docs+ app.
File – Here you will find options such as new, save, open, print and encrypt (with a password).
Home – Here you will find many of the same tools you use in Word such as text formatting options, copy & paste options, paragraph formatting, styles and the search and find and replace feature.
Insert – Use this section to insert things such as blank pages, tables, pictures, links, headers & footers, text boxes and other objects.
Page Layout – If you need to do things such as change page orientation, margins and paper size, you can do so from here. You can also add color to your page or create a watermark.
References – From this tab, you can do things such as create a table of contents, as well as insert captions and footnotes.
Mail Merge – Here is where you can create labels and envelopes from your data just like you can in Word.
View – Docs+ has several different views you can choose from such as simple, draft and print layout. You can also add or remove the vertical and horizontal rules from the app from here as well as zoom in and out of the page.
Review – There are several tools you can use from here such as run the spell checker, add comments, enable tracking and change monitoring and the ability to protect your document with a password.
When it comes to saving your document, you have several options available to you depending on your needs. When you click on Save as, you can view the various types of documents you can save your file as such as .docx, .doc, .rtf, .txt, .html, .dotm and so on.
One thing you will notice after installing Docs+ is that it will become the default application for your Word documents and will change the icons for your Word files. This is fine if you do not have Word installed on your computer, but if you do, you may want to change the file association for .docx files.
