Display Your Users PC and Network Configuration on Their Desktops

If you manage multiple computers or servers it may be hard to keep track of which desktop you are looking at if you use something like a KVM or remote connection to switch back and forth between them. Plus it may also be able to keep track of things such as that computers specs in regards to its IP address, processor and RAM and free hard drive space. And of course this information can change over time meaning you will need to update any manually created records that you might have.

BGInfo from Systernals allows you to show your computers configuration as a bitmap image on the desktop so you do not need to look up key information when troubleshooting the computer. Best of all, its free!

If you manage a home lab or a fleet of servers, you’ve likely faced the frustration of RDP-ing into a machine and realizing five minutes later you’re on the wrong server. BGInfo solves this by embedding system data directly into your desktop wallpaper. Unlike ‘widget’ apps that hog RAM, BGInfo creates a static bitmap image and then exits, making it extremely lightweight for production environments.

Because BGInfo simply writes a new desktop bitmap and exits you don’t have to worry about it consuming system resources or interfering with other applications.

BGInfo is fully compatible with Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025. However, when using it on high-resolution 4K monitors, you may need to adjust the font size within the configuration (.bgi) file to ensure the text remains legible without obscuring your desktop icons.

To keep your ‘Free Disk Space’ or ‘IP Address’ fields accurate, you shouldn’t just run BGInfo once. Use Windows Task Scheduler to trigger a refresh.

  1. Create a task that runs at Log On.

  2. Set the action to run bginfo.exe with your saved config file using the /silent /timer:0 switches.

  3. This ensures that every time you connect to the machine, the data reflected on the wallpaper is current.

You can download BGinfo from their website.
