Gmail is one of the most of the most popular email services in use today. It is owned by Google and is one of their many free Google Apps that you can use online. For the most part, you use access your Gmail account via your web browser, but you can also configure desktop email clients such as Outlook or Windows Mail to use with Gmail.
Even though Gmail has many great features, there is still much room for improvement when it comes to features that many think should be included by default. One thing that many Gmail users complain about is that it is difficult to see all the attachments within a specific email chain. If your conversation has many back and forth replies with attachments, it can be quite a long process to find the attachment you are looking for. In this article, we will be showing you how to display all the attachments in a Gmail email thread.
As email conversations grow longer, especially in professional or collaborative settings, attachments can easily get buried beneath multiple replies and forwarded messages. This makes locating a specific file unnecessarily time‑consuming, particularly when you are dealing with deadlines or need quick access to an important document. Having a clearer way to view all attachments in one place can significantly improve productivity and reduce the frustration that comes with digging through lengthy email threads.
1. Locate the Email Thread with Attachments
The first step in this process is to find and open the specific email chain in Gmail that contains the files you need. The image below shows an email chain in Gmail with several attachments sent back and forth from both addresses within the chain. Normally, if you wanted to see all of these attachments, you would need to painfully expand and open each email individually just to see the attachment you were looking for.

2. Access the More Menu
One incredibly easy way to get around this frustrating interface limitation is to use a slightly hidden feature located inside the Gmail dashboard. While looking at your opened email thread, you will need to look near the top right corner of the email viewing pane and click on the three vertical dots. This button opens up the “More” menu, which contains several advanced actions you can take regarding the current email conversation.
3. Select the Forward All Option
Once the dropdown menu is open on your screen, you will see various choices such as marking the thread unread or muting the conversation entirely. You will need to scroll to the very bottom of this specific list and carefully choose the option labeled “Forward all”. Selecting this option commands Gmail to automatically bundle the entire history of the email thread into a single, brand new message draft.

4. View Your Consolidated Attachments
This action will immediately create a new email draft window on your screen and will conveniently show all of the attachments compiled at the bottom of the email. You absolutely do not need to send this email to yourself or anyone else to make this trick work. You can simply use this new draft window to view all the attachments of this lengthy Gmail thread in one highly organized place.

5. Download and Manage the Files
Now that you can see all the attachments from the email thread grouped together, you can interact with them directly from the draft box. You can do things such as right-click on one of the files and choose “save link as” to instantly download any of the attachments to your computer. If you choose some of the other right-click options such as “open link in new tab” or “open link in new window”, the browser will most likely just ask you to download the file as well.

6. Share the Attachment Links
While you have this consolidated list open, you might be tempted to use the “copy link” or “share” option to send the file to someone else without downloading it. This action will indeed let you paste the direct URL link into a new email or chat message to share with a coworker. However, you should be aware that the file link will most likely only be able to be opened by someone currently logged in with your specific Google account credentials.
Summary of Displaying All Gmail Attachments
To summarize, using the “Forward all” method is an incredibly handy way to display all the attachments of a long Gmail email thread in one place. While it is highly effective for consolidation, it is still slightly limited as to what advanced actions you can do once you have this list of attachments compiled. But if you are simply looking for a fast, reliable way to view the attachments or download a particular one without digging through replies, then this method should work just fine.
