Gmail is one of the most popular web based email clients in use today with millions of Gmail accounts in use around the world. Part of the reason it is so popular is that it is fairly easy to use and ties into many of the other Google Apps that are also free to use. Even though Gmail is so popular, it still lacks some features that many of us would think would be included within the app. One of these features is the ability to display only the unread email in your Primary inbox category.
There are several ways to edit how your email is displayed in Gmail and in this article, we will be showing you several methods you can use to change how your messages are shown within your inbox. Then you can use the method that works the best for you or more than one of the methods if desired.
1. Understand the Default Gmail Inbox
The image below shows a typical Gmail inbox layout with the categories such as Primary, Promotions, Social and Updates arranged across the top tab bar. The unread or brand new emails are shown in a heavy bold font so they stand out from the rest of the list. The older messages that have already been read are no longer bold and simply blend into the background.

2. Highlight Unread Emails Using the Checkbox
Let’s say you want to view only your unread emails and none of your read messages. One thing you can do is click on the drop down arrow next to the select all checkbox located at the top of your message list. From that tiny menu you can then choose the Unread option to target those specific incoming messages.

3. Recognize the Checkbox Method Flaws
The main issue when using this specific method is that it will only select and highlight your unread emails with a shaded background color. They will still be shown completely mixed together along with your read messages. You may not find this visual setup very useful if you are trying to clean up a heavily cluttered screen.

4. Change the Default Inbox Type
Another option is to go directly to the main Gmail settings by clicking on the gear icon at the upper right and then clicking on See all settings. From the Gmail settings menu you would then go to the Inbox section and change the Inbox type from Default to Unread first. Then carefully scroll to the very bottom of the page and click on the Save changes button to apply the modification.

5. Navigate the Unread First Layout
This setting change will then show all your unread emails grouped at the top of the list in a section labeled Unread. Then as you scroll down past your unread messages, there will be another distinct section labeled Everything else for your older mail. One thing you will instantly notice though is that all of the categories at the top of the message list will be gone since all of the email will be combined into this one giant list. You will be shown small labels next to the emails telling you what category they are in though. At the top right of the page, you will have the option to go to the next page to see more unread messages if you have more than what fits on one screen.

6. Display Unread Email Using a Search Filter
The next method we are going to use to display only the unread email in your inbox involves using a manual search filter. This is often the fastest way to sort your messages without digging entirely through the settings menu. In the large search box at the top of the page you can type in the following text to have Gmail display only the unread email in your inbox.
label:unread label:inbox

7. Review the Global Filter Results
When you use this exact search filter, you will be shown all unread messages pulled from every category within Gmail. The messages themselves will have colored labels right next to them indicating exactly what category they originated from. If your goal is to clear out promotional spam alongside your personal emails, this global search view works perfectly.
8. Filter Only the Primary Inbox Category
Many users find the global unread search far too cluttered with marketing emails and social media alerts. If you want to only see unread email strictly in your Primary inbox category, then you can use this specific filter instead. Click your cursor into the top search box and type the command exactly as written below.
label:unread category:primary

9. Clear the Filter to Restore Default View
Now you will only be shown unread emails that are physically within your Primary Inbox category and not the other categories such as promotions, social and updates. If you want to change things back to the default view, simply delete the filter text from the search box and press enter. Your inbox will immediately be displayed with the standard read and unread messages mixed together once again.
