LCD vs. LED Monitors

So it’s time to replace that old CRT monitor with a flat screen and now the question on your mind is which type of monitor should I get, an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or the newer LED (Light Emitting Diode) type monitor. Flat screen monitors have been around for a long time now and they are getting cheaper all the time. You can get a nice sized monitor like a 22 or 24 inches for under $200 nowadays. With these prices there is no reason to have a CRT monitor anymore unless you like the image quality better for some reason.

Now that you have made up your mind that you are getting your new monitor you may want to know the difference between LCD and LED monitors to help in your decision as to what type to get. One thing to keep in mind is that LED monitors will be a little more expensive (not much) since its newer technology but that most likely will change in the near future. Another thing that people like about LED monitors is that they are even thinner and lighter than LCD monitors.

What sets LED monitors apart from LCD monitors is the way they are backlit. Backlighting illuminates the monitor from the back of the display panel. LCD monitors use a cold cathode fluorescent lamp for its backlighting while LED monitors use LEDs for backlighting hence the name. This type of backlighting is what allows for the thinner monitors and offers other advantages such as less power consumption, a brighter image and it gives off less heat. Some will say that LED monitors offer a finer resolution and more natural color as well.

There are also two types of LED monitors to consider, RGB dynamic LED and edge LED. RGB dynamic uses LEDs placed behind the screen and edge LED uses LEDs placed around the monitor frame.

When looking at an LCD monitor you need to be standing in front of it because if you move off to the side and try and look at the screen it will be harder to see because you lose the light and the image becomes darker. LED monitors offer a better picture from other angles.

So as you can see there is not much difference between the two types of monitors except for how they are backlit and it seems that LED monitors have the advantage in almost every category. There are still some people who think LCD monitors have a better picture so what you need to do is go see them in person before buying one. Different brands will have different quality level so it’s never a good idea to buy a monitor online without seeing it for yourself first.
